How Much Meat Do You Need for a Spit Roast?

Start with a sensible adult allowance, then adjust for appetites, other food, event length and the type of meat being cooked.

Ask for a meat quote
A useful starting point

Allow around 200 to 250 grams per adult.

That range is a planning guide rather than a fixed rule. The best quantity depends on what else is served and how the event is structured.

A party with substantial starters, salads, bread and dessert may sit toward the lower end. A long event with few sides or particularly hungry guests may need more.

Party Spit Hire does not price packages per person. Guest count helps estimate meat quantities, then equipment, meat and event services are itemised in the quote.

What changes the allowance

Four details matter more than a rigid formula.

01

Other food

Starters, bread, salads, hot vegetables and desserts reduce how much roast meat each guest is likely to eat.

02

Guest mix

Children, adults, appetites and dietary requirements can shift the total quantity substantially.

03

Event length

A long afternoon or evening often creates more repeat visits to the serving table than a short meal.

04

Type of meat

Bones, trimming, carving loss and the number of meat choices all affect the usable serving quantity.

Turn the guest count into a plan

Estimate, then sense-check the rest of the menu.

Multiply the expected adult-equivalent guest count by 200 to 250 grams for an initial estimate. Treat children and guests with lighter appetites sensibly rather than applying the adult figure automatically.

Next, consider whether the spit roast is the only substantial food. If there are generous sides or another main dish, the lower end may be adequate. If the roast is the entire meal, add a practical buffer.

  • Confirm the realistic number of adults and children
  • List starters, sides, bread and other main dishes
  • Consider whether guests will return for seconds
  • Allow for bones or trimming in whole-animal weights
Match the estimate to equipment

The total meat weight determines the roaster size.

Once you have an estimated quantity, compare it with the roaster capacity. The Party Spit Hire range supports up to 6kg, 14kg, 16kg or 24kg of meat depending on the equipment selected.

Gyros has separate capacity limits of 8kg, 18kg, 24kg and 36kg. Whole animals are sized from their dressed weight and generally use a dedicated roaster.

  • Small roaster: up to 6kg meat or 8kg gyros
  • Standard roaster: up to 14kg meat or 18kg gyros
  • Large roaster: up to 16kg meat or 24kg gyros
  • Extra-large roaster: up to 24kg meat or 36kg gyros
Keep planning

Use the estimate to choose equipment or a fixed package.

How much meat should I allow per adult?

Around 200 to 250 grams per adult is a useful starting point. Adjust for other food, appetite, event length and the type of meat.

Does a whole animal weight equal the serving weight?

No. Bone, trimming and carving affect the amount served, so use the dressed weight and discuss the expected yield with the supplier.

How much gyros fits on a standard roaster?

The 1 metre standard roaster supports up to 18kg of gyros.

Are Party Spit Hire packages priced per guest?

No. Ready-made packages have a fixed listed price and custom orders are quoted from the equipment, meat and services selected.
